Three Easy Steps to a GREAT Photography Experience!

Clients, Ellijay Georgia, Photography, Portraits, Sessions

What Gives???

$45… For 20 minutes… Resulting in… 5 digital images?

Five. Images.

That’s it?

Or, you can pay just $10 per person! And the photographer will come to you!

One doesn’t sound like a very good deal, does it? And the other is, well, convenient and inexpensive… But do you know what you will be really getting out of the package?

These are some of the “packages” and prices many photographers today are giving! But why? And are these “deals” really a good investment?

What Makes a Great Photography Experience? 3 Steps. From Leslie Byrd Photography, Located in Ellijay, GA

You Get What You Pay For

Everyone knows it. So why are some photographers offering such “cheap” photography? There could be many reasons… Maybe they are just starting out and building up their portfolio; if this is the case, it is definitely okay, but they should definitely make sure that you know! Some are very talented and offer services at barely-nothing-to-free while gaining experience and building confidence, while others charge next to nothing to beat out competitors and  offer “services” that…well… I would much rather do without. Make sure that you know the difference! Perhaps the market is “bad” or there are many other photographers in the area. Maybe the artist is going through a dry spell. It could be that they are simply starting out on their own and unsure of what to offer and charge. When looking at a Photographer’s services and prices, it is almost always a good idea to look at what services they are offering, the pricing that goes with it, and then even asking why. Remember- the photography experience is not just about you, but also about the photographer; it should be a working relationship between the both of you.

Here’s How to Ensure a Great Photography Experience!

  1. Research! Look on the photographer’s Facebook Page & Website. Do they have a Pinterest Page? An Instagram? Look there too! Don’t just look into the pricing- research everything those prices will get you! Does the Photographer ask more for their sessions because they offer you more of their time and experience? Are you receiving digital images or prints? Both? How many? Are there any extras included? Are you being provided with a quality service? Do you like the Photographer’s style of images and portraiture? Are they local & available for the times you will need your session done? Ask & Research!
  2. Communicate! A Great Photography experience is centered around great communication! Your photographer should ask you questions, and anticipate at least a few you may have yourself, in an effort to provide you with the best experience possible. Your photographer will want to ensure that you are both comfortable and happy with the entirety of the experience, and will talk with you as much as possible before, during, and after the actual session to help make that possible for you.
  3. Have Fun & Experiment! While your photographer definitely wants you comfortable and happy, we absolutely love it when you are open and available to have fun during your photo shoot. We each have our unique and special individuality and it is awesome when you show a little bit of that during your session! Your photographer will be thrilled to capture your youthfulness, quirkiness, or just fun self on camera, helping you to put your best face forward! And that positive energy? It will radiate through you and come across in all your other images as well, creating a memorable time during your experience, and absolutely terrific photographs you will love!!!

Are you ready for a GREAT photography experience? Check out all I have to offer, and message me today for a free consult.

Theodore Newborn-10
Those adorable little hands and tiny feet! What a cute little “Teddy!”
Two-week-old Theodore recently came into the studio with two of my favorite past clients, Jenny & Darin, for this sweet-as-can-be newborn session!

Newborn Session- In Studio

The first of my new in-studio sessions, it was fitting to have a new addition join me, and an absolute pleasure to work with this little guy to create these precious images for his mom and dad. I had just received the wood-grain, and brick backdrops I had ordered, in addition to a silky black cloth previously acquired, and collected an assortment of soft, warm blankets to utilize during this session. The room was made warm, with soft fans blowing, a window unit on to create a comfortable atmosphere. In the background, classical instrumentals playing. Surfaces had been cleaned and wiped down, a lavender diffuser turned on, camera equipment checked and double checked…everything done to ensure preparation and a nice environment for this little family.

Welcoming the Family

It is so nice working with clients I have had sessions with previously; often times there is a pleasant familiarity, even a friendship, that lends itself well to a session. A level of trust goes a long way between photographer and client, especially where babies are concerned. And although it was my first time meeting little Theodore, there was a comfort present that transitioned to positioning, posing, and photographing the little man and his parents.

Capturing a Newborn… Who Captures Your Heart

Babies can often be the most difficult of persons to photograph- they cannot take direction the way most children and adults can. And extra care must be given when positioning and posing them, as not to cause any kind of harm or discomfort. Gentle touch is key, and slow and steady is definitely the winning pace. Unexpected mishaps are sure to occur- spit ups, blowouts, fussiness and outright rages- as well as the expected feedings and diaper changes. It can take a great deal of time and patience to capture the little wonder of the innocent babe.

Parents’ Pride & Joy

What I love capturing for clients almost as much as their sweet child, is the relationship that they have with their little one. It is truly an amazing bond and such a beautiful thing to witness; there was plenty of this unique attachment to be privy to, and to capture during this session.

Jenny & Darin, congratulations on your newest addition! It was great seeing all of you and helping you to capture these beautiful memories!

Photography in the Park

"Leslie was AMAZING and we had so much fun! Superb!" - Jennifer Houle| Family Portrait Session, Ellijay Georgia

A sweltering Summer Day… Barely a breeze… Sun, shining from directly overhead, and not a cloud in the sky. Sounds like the makings for a great day at the park! But…not exactly the best conditions for an on-location photo shoot…

Without cloud cover, the radiating sun can too easily create harsh, blown-out highlights across subjects, and just as distracting shadows. The wrong pose, slightest tilt of the head in the wrong direction, shows on squinty-eyed, grimaced faces. And oppressive, humid temperatures can quickly cause even the most entusiastic of clients to drag their feet and rush through a session.

Not the case with this bunch…

Family and Fun!!!

It’s a great experience when photographer and client can meet cohesively together with ideas and excitement for a successful session. It is important that all can easily communicate and transition from pose to pose, idea to idea, and work together. Parks are a place for playfulness, and that playful energy was definitely brought along and welcomed. And likewise, an effortless back and forth of dialogue to create beautifully stunning images.

Jennifer | Photography Portrait Session| Ellijay, GA

A group of five females, I worked together with them to capture both individual, and group images. Especially important when highlighting teenagers and children in a portrait (or anyone in general, really), is directing them in a gentle way to find and bring out a bit of their unique personalities, and the ability to translate that into the camera. Even better is when client(s) has a contagiously lighthearted attitude, and “out-take” images are purposely created to keep things fun and interesting; it creates a rare session dynamic that keeps it moving forward, full of smiles and inspiration.

Working Against the Elements

Jennifer | Photography Portrait Session| Ellijay, GA

One of the things that I find myself and the client enjoying most about on-location park sessions, is that it allows for us to move from spot to spot during the course of the photography, creating a wide variety of poses, natural props, and backgrounds. Even the most unfortunate of circumstances can often provide opportunity for beauty, fun, and creativity. Direct, overhead, harsh natural light, for example, may call for images to be taken closer to the cover of bushes and trees, where branches and leaves create a natural filter. When the light cannot be avoided, there are times when a simple soft, peachy preset can be applied post-processing, resulting in an airy feminine portrait that borders on ethereal.

Thank You!

Thank you, Jennifer, and your delightful crew, for the awesome session! It was such a FUN experience, and that was due in large part, all to you! There were so many favorites from this session, I’m not sure where to begin! I’m so glad I was able to provide you with so many more than we expected, and I hope it provided you with great memories and gifts to pass along. I look forward to working with you again!

The Perfect Setting

Young (4)I LOVE shooting small, intimate weddings, and I was recently blessed in offering to do so for a couple at a private ceremony, located at a cabin tucked within the winding roads of Coosawattee. The air was cool and crisp; sunlight streamed down through tree branches; water glistened and rippled beautifully in the property’s small lake. It was a beautiful day on May 4th, 2016 as the closest of friends and family came together in support of American Legion Georgia Post 82 Commander Dennis Young, and his bride, Marjorie Williams.

A Walk to Remember

Young Wedding| Wedding Photography | Leslie Byrd Photography, Ellijay, GeorgiaAdorned in a creamy white sleeveless knee length dress, Marjorie walked down stone driveway and wooden steps, arm-in-arm with the Best Man. Friend Jim Brackin sang a romantic tune as the bride, beaming, descended down to the dock to meet her groom. Upon reaching him, hands embraced, eyes locked, mouths turned upwards into smiles, and as the melody carried on and came to a close, Marjorie danced, twirling lightly and playfully away from Dennis and then back again.

“I Do”

Young (56)Is it just me, or is there something about personalized vows that are just amazing? Even though this couple kept theirs’ simple and sweet, the joy and sentiment between the two could definitely be felt by all present. Vows given, rings exchanged (despite a very minor mishap where one of the rings had to be retrieved from the cabin), couple announced husband and wife, and the kiss…

The kiss…

Smiling faces, pats on the back, and felicitations… There were champagne toasts, cutting of the cake, and a bit unusual of a bouquet toss.

I am so happy to have been able to assist them in capturing these memories they made on this beautiful occasion, and in giving these newlyweds the opportunity to share their love with those they hold close in their hearts through my photography.

Thank you

Thank you, Marjorie & Dennis, for allowing me to document this special day for you! I wish you two the absolute best for your years together, and I hope they are plentiful and exceptionally blessed! Congratulations!

A Beautiful Day Downtown

Sharon-7The sun was shining, wind softly blowing, sky just a bit overcast. We walked on stone pavers and dewy grass, around the building, across the lot, and over to the boardwalk – a fairly new wooden structure built in the alley way behind downtown Ellijay‘s shops and eateries. Being still early, the walk was vacant other than the two of us, making it a perfect spot for an “on location” session. Empty chairs and flowers everywhere quickly drew my attention, and wood beams contrasted nicely with brick buildings. The setting felt relaxed and easy – a mix of small town country with just a hint of urban city. I casually directed my client, Sharon in a few easy poses as we strolled along and made our way around the square.

Spring in the Air

Sharon-6

Spring is one of my favorite seasons to photograph in (truthfully, I can find something great in every season – beauty is everywhere!), and this day was no different. I just love the fragrant aroma of new blooms drifting through the air, even if they do make my nose itch! And today they were everywhere, planted in hanging pots and in wooden troughs, ivy climbing up brick; I used them to my advantage, composing them skillfully around my subject within each frame. The lighting was perfect most of the day as well- the cloudy sky and early morning light prevented too much sun from shining and casting shadows.

A Sneak Peek

Sharon-24

This is Sharon’s Mini Session Sneak Peek. Her images will  soon be uploaded to her own Private Password-Protected Gallery, and she will also be receiving her Presentation Package. It was great working with you, Sharon; I had a lot of fun! I hope you enjoy this preview, and all of your images!

DiY Camera Strap

DIY, Ellijay Georgia, Photography, Projects, Uncategorized

imageNo Sew.

I repeat. No. Sew.

And simple.  Inexpensive. Stylish. Comfortable.

You will LOVE this strap,

and wonder why didn’t I think of that sooner?

All you need for this DIY is your camera, two keychains with both a medium-sized ring and lobster clasp each, and an infinity scarf in any color or print.

image
Instructions:

  1. Make sure you have your keychains (two of them, both with a medium ring and lobster clasp); I chose two with my initials, but you can choose smaller ones, or even plain ones with nothining on them. It is up to you! Also you need an infinity scarf. Choose and color or patten you like. I prefer soft and stretchy materials, as they tend to be more comfortable and easy to work with.
  2. Remove the lobster clasp from one of the rings; go aheas and clip it on to one side of your camera. While you are at it, if you’d like, also take the charm or decoration off the same ring, and slide it on to the other ring.
  3. This should leave you with one plain ring, and another ring that has a lobster clasp and two charms.
  4. Most infinity scarfs are too thick for this project. Lay yours flat on a hard surface, and cut the scarf in half. Make sure not to cut on either seam. You are wanting to basically cut it to create two smaller infinity scarfs. You can use one for the camera, and still have one to wear! 😊
  5. Pull on the scarf a bit to help the newly cut side to roll. Shake it out so any loose bits will fall out. Now take your key ring with charms and clasp, and split one side open. If it is too tight, you can carefully slide scissors in between the ring slots to make it wider. You are wanting the opening just big enough to slide an end of the scarf through.
  6. Once the scarf is in, remove scissors, and move the ring around until the scarf is in.
  7. Repeat with the other ring to get the scarf through it. Once both rings are on the scarf, attach the plain ring to the lobster clasp on the camera. Attach the second keychain using the other lobster clasp.
You now have a cute, custom camera strap!

One of the best things about this strap is that if the fabric is stretchable, you can wear this around your neck or shoulder as a standard strap, OR you can wrap it on your wrist for a more secure hold on your camera.

Precious Moments, Special Memories| Wedding Photography

Will & Robin (18)

Pinks, Yellows, Blues…
Love, Roses, & Spring-Time Hues…
That’s what this beautiful wedding was made of…

A Theme of Precious Moments & Spring, set in the beautiful Water Tower Conference Center venue in Coosawattee River Resort in Ellijay, GA, family and friends came together to provide a wonderful experience, and to create a light & airy backdrop for the anxious couple to take their vows and say, “I do.”

The table was set in a soft yellow cover, and elegantly highlighted in pastel flowers and lace. The cake was white with strawberry filling, and swirled white chocolate cream cheese frosting, decorated lightly with handmade gum-paste roses and fondant “ribbon” border. Of course it was topped with a Precious Moments Bride & Groom Topper.

Will & Robin (13)

Will & Robin (47)
Everywhere were flowers, bright colors, butterflies…
Tables had glasses turned over to hold tealight candles on top, and various flowers within. My second-shooter and I went carefully over every detail to capture each little piece of the bride’s special day, each portion and parcel making up this beautiful occasion. From the floral arrangements to the ring set, the venue, the wedding party, and more… We are set on assisting every couple to retain the unique memories of their exceptional occasion.

We had so much fun with this couple and the whole wedding party, as we have a special closeness to many involved. I particularly know the Bride and Groom as a part of my extended family, and I was so happy to be able to be with them on this day, to assist them in so many ways, with capturing their wedding, and in many other ways.

Will & Robin (49)

Congratulations!

I am so happy that these two have found their happiness together, and that I was able to be a part of it for this one day. I truly love documenting these moments, and witnessing the joy others get in seeing and reliving the best parts of their lives. It is a gift to be able to help others in going back to these occasions over and over again, when they see and share their images online with their private galleries or their personalized flash-drives.

I want to extend the warmest wishes and blessings upon this wonderful couple for a long, joyful, beautiful, and prosperous marriage. May life only bring you the very best. I hope to work with you both again soon. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of your day.

A Photographer’s To-Do

Clients, Photography, Presentation Packages, Sessions

An Eventful Session

A weekend of cake making & decorating (not the norm), capturing wedding images for friends and clients (hopefully soon to be the norm), and spending time with family (every day, day in and day out).

After a whirlwind mix of working, laughing, relaxing, and working some more, the wonderful chaos continues. The mind of the creative is often never-ceasing, always turning with new ideas, things to try, and then of course, the absolute must-get-dones.

image

The After Party…

The photograher’s work does not end after the session or event. No, for us the work has only just begun, as we go in to cull through each image, carefully editing and processing them, giving each special attention to provide you with the best possible finished product.

We often make light of this work, but consider that normal portrait sessions can turn out up to 300 images depending on session length and your photographer, of which you will only receive between 10 & 50. Beyond that, large events and weddings should produce 50-100 images per hour, while you will typically receive an album or disc of 200-500. That is a lot of time pouring into making sure each image is carefully cropped, exposure (lighting) is good, colors are nice, and any unwanted blemishes or distractions are edited out or toned down. And don’t forget going over the proofs with you, and ordering any prints, canvases, and photo books (if available and offered)! And then there is the presentation boxes that so many offer, all of the correspondence back & forth.

Dedication

Like most photographers and service providers, Leslie Byrd Photography works hard to go the extra mile and provide excellent service. At the top of my mental to-do list, something I never have to write down, is two things I try my best to run my new business by:

Having a photographer who believes you are beautiful, results in your having images that are beautiful.

And

Treat everyone how you would like to be treated by others.

I firmly believe we all have beauty in us, and that we all deserve to be treated with that same beauty. Whether it is  a special note or gift in your presentation package, or helping a bride to fasten on her pearls before a wedding, Leslie Byrd Photography is all about you.

What would you add to a Photographer’s To-Do List? Tell me below.
